Site Updates - McCauley and Doughty Lead Rankings Douglas McDaniel Sep 15, 2010

CORRECTION: Cody Pelliccioni from Morgantown leads the rankings with an amazing 15:22 at the Red White and Blue Classic. This is a 4:57 mile pace! I apologize for not having this PA meet in the rankings when the article was published. This is the 25th fastest time in the Nation this year.

 

WV Runners is currently up to date with a few exceptions. I am still missing the Small school results from the Brunswick Invitational, the Judge Charles W. Woodward Relays from 9/7, and the Bob Creamer Memorial 3K from 9/4 which is a college meet at Wheeling Jesuit.

 

I will be glad to post small meets, college meets, and middle school meets along with the high school invitationals if you e-mail me the results.

 

Currently, Sarah McCauley of Philip Barbour leads the rankings for the girls with a 18:53 posted at the Chick-Fil-A. Letitia Propst of Elkins is narrowly in second with a 18:57.9 clocking at the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational.

 

Brandon Doughty, senior, from Jefferson leads the boys with a Milesplit first team elite time of 15:45 ran at the Interstate Classic. Sophomore Jacob Burcham from Cabell Midland is right on his heels with a 15:49 posting at the GEICO Classic.

Misses National Freshman Record by .03 Seconds

Freshman Jacob Burcham from Cabell Midland entered the New Balance Outdoor Nationals with the fastest 1600m time for a freshman in the U.S. After his run today on the Irwin Belk Track in Greensboro, NC., he left no doubt that he is the top freshman mile runner in the nation. Burcham missed breaking the freshman mile record by .03 wth a time of 4:15.10. Burcham closed his last 400m in 62 seconds to take 2nd in his heat.

Viney Finishes 10th in 400m Hurdles at New Balance Outdoor Nationals Douglas McDaniel Jun 19, 2010

Double State Champion Cameron (Cam) Viney from Elkins placed 10th in the 400m hurdles at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals today at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T. The sophomore running in the 3rd heat posted a 53.78 and waited for the completion of all 6 heats to learn he made the top 10. Viney was 3rd in his heat.

McVicker Places 13th in 5000m at New Balance Outdoor Nationals Douglas McDaniel Jun 17, 2010

2010 West Virginia AAA 3200m outdoor State champion Dayton McVicker from Fairmont Senior placed 13th tonight at the New Balance Outdoor National Championship with a time of 15:26.90. McVicker ran in the fast heat and came through the 1600m with the lead pack in 4:43. After a strong 3200m time of 9:42, he fell off the pace during the early part of the 3rd mile. However, like a champion he gathered himself and finished strong. After the race, McVicker said he never felt comfortable and was having difficulty breathing in the hot and muggy weather. The junior said he planned to come back next year and give it another try.

NCAA Division II Championship Updates for WVIAC Athletes Douglas McDaniel May 28, 2010

Kump, Carnett, and Wilks All-Americans!

 

 

Ricky Kump ( Kump Decathlon Live Updates ) is ALL-AMERICAN. Placed 3rd in final event, 1500m run, in 4:34.23 to finish 5th overall with 6,770 points.

 

Wheeling Jesuit sophomore Sarah Campanelli placed 16th last night in the 1500m prelims in 4:45.68. The top 12 advanced.

 

Kevoy Douglas, senior from West Virginia Wesleyan College, runs in the 200m prelims today (Friday) scheduled for 6:15 p.m. Freshman Shawnee Carnett of Concord University runs in the 800m prelims today at 6:40 p.m. Josh Wilks of Seton Hill follows in the 800m prelims at 6:55 p.m.

 

UPDATES: Douglas runs  21.53 and places 10th. Emily Taylor finished 9th with a throw in the discus of 146' 0.25" and just one spot out of All-American. Freshman Shawnee Carnett of Concord University is now an All-American placing 7th in 2:09.84 Josh Wilks of Seton Hill gave the WVIAC its 3rd All-American as he finished 8th in the 800m in 1:50.87.

 

Emily Taylor of Wheeling Jesuit University  competes Saturday at 4:30 p.m. in the Discus.

NCAA Divison II Championship Begins With Decathlon Douglas McDaniel May 27, 2010

Kump is All-American With 5th Place Overall


 

Ricky Kump of West Virgina Wesleyan has gotten off to a good start in the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships held at Irwin Belk Track in Charlotte hosted by Johnson C. Smith University.

Thursday

Event #1 (100m dash): Placed 2nd in 11.11 for 836 points

Event #2 (Long jump): Placed 9th (20'- 11.75") for 673 points

Event #3  (shot put): Placed 9th (37'-7.25) for 568 points - 6th place overall after 3 events

Event #4 (high jump) Placed 2nd (6'06") for785 points - Currently in 4th place overall with 2862 points and only 89 points out of first place. This was a Personal Best in high jump.

Event#5 (400m dash): Placed 2nd in 49.63 - 3rd place after Day One with 3741 points and 124 points out of first place

 

Friday

Event #6(110meter hurdles): Placed 7th in 15.89. Moves into 2nd place overall after 6 Events

Event #7 (Discus Throw):  Finishes 12th with throw of 102' - 4". 4th Overall with 4974 points

Event #8 (Pole Vault): Vaulted 12'  3" placing 10th.  6th place overall with 5,523 points

Kyle Davies of St. Marys won all 4 events he entered in class A  scoring the highest point total (40) of any athlete in any classification. The 4 State titles were in the 100m (11.29), 200m (23.08), 400m (50.71) and long jump (20'-07")

WV State Meet Day One: McVicker Beats Burcham Douglas McDaniel May 21, 2010

Dayton McVicker, junior, from Fairmont Senior won the much anticipated West Virginia AAA 3200m run in 9:14.23 which is a WV State AAA meet record previously set by Zach Tennant of North Marion in 9:14.84 last year. US #1 3200m and 1600m Freshman Jacob Burcham of Cabell Midland ran 9:15.94. Burcham pushed most of the pace and told his coach, Chris Parsons, prior to the race he wanted to run 9:15. McVicker ran a great race and with about 900 meters to go made his move. Burcham ran a 61+ second last lap, but McVicker just pushed right by him and Burcham did not have an answer to go any faster. Brandon Doughty of Jefferson ran a 9:23.20 to place 3rd.

6 WVIAC Athletes Earn Trips To NCAA Nationals Douglas McDaniel May 20, 2010

6 WVIAC track and field athletes have earned trips to the 2010 NCAA Division II Track and Field Championships to be held May 27-29 at the Irwin Belk Track Complex in Charlotte, NC hosted by Johnson C. Smith University.

 

The 6 athletes are: Emily Taylor, seeded 7th in the discus, of Wheeling Jesuit University, Sarah Campanelli, seeded 10th in the 1500m, of  Wheeling Jesuit University, Shawnee Carnett, seeded 15th in the 800m, from Concord University, Josh Wilks, seeded 15th in the 800m, from Seton Hill University, Ricky Kump, seeded 12th in the decathlon, from West Virginia Wesleyan, and Kevoy Douglas of West Virginia Wesleyan seeded 17th in the 200m.

Johnson, Drazba and Sigler Lead St. Marys

Williamstown Defines Team/Davies Scores 40

 WV Region IV A  -- Charleston. St. Marys girls held off a pesky Williamstown team 196-181 to win the West Virginia Region IV A meet. Charleston Catholic was a distant 3rd with 86 points. Each team got their points in different ways. St. Marys won 10 individual events and Williamstown won 3 individual events. Williamstown won 4 of the 5 relay events with St. Marys winning the other relay race.

 

Alison Johnson, a sophomore, from St. Marys led her team with 32.5 points with some unusual winning combinations. Johnson won the 400m dash in 1:02.76, the 300m hurdles (50.61), the long jump (15’-02.5”), and anchored the winning 4 x 800m relay in 10:50.21. Freshman Maggie Drazba scored 30 points by sweeping the distance races. Drazba won the 800m (2:31.77), 1600m (5:29.39) and 3200m (11:35.70). Teammate Ashley Sigler, senior, won the shot put (30’-10”) and discus (98’-03”).

Richwood Girls Cruise; Boys Win Tough Battle

 

WV Region III A – Charleston. Richwood girls cruised to victory with 204 points, but the Richwood boys had a hard fought victory to sweep the Region III A titles. The Richwood ladies won 7 of the 17 events with only one double winner. 2nd place went to Pocahontas County with 92 points and 3rd went to Midland Trail with 56 points.

 

Breanna Mazella took both the 1600m (6:10.08) and the 3200m (14:04.79). Mazella placed 2nd in the 800m (2:51.19) and was a member of the winning 4 x 400m relay (4:48.63) to earn a total of 30.5 points. For some examples in domination, the Richwood ladies scored 21 points in the high jump, 20 points in the long jump, 20 in the 3200m, 18 in the 1600m, 18 in the 300m hurdles, 14 in the discus and 12 in the shot put.

Tucker County Sweeps Titles

 

WV Region II A  – Weston. Tucker County boys and girls each scored 142 points and grabbed the West Virginia Region II A Championships. East Hardy and South Harrison finished 2nd and 3rd respectively in boys and girls. The Tucker County girls did it without winning a single individual event. However, they placed many athletes high in most events and gathered 40 points in the relays with three wins and a 3rd and 4th place finish.

 

Randi Jenkins, junior, from East Hardy was the most productive athlete earning 23 points. Jenkins won the 100m (13.54), placed 2nd in the 200m (29.01), and was a member of the winning 4 x 100m (55.13) and 4 x 200m (1:55.95) relay teams. Junior Katrin Schwarz of South Harrison was a double winner in the 800m (2:38.49) and the 1600m (5:57.63).

Doddridge County Dominates Region Meet

 

WV Region I A -- Wheeling. Doddridge County dominated both the girls and boys team competition at the West Virginia Region I A Championship. The lady bulldogs scored 166 points and easily outdistanced runner-up Wheeling Central Catholic (94 points) and Madonna (90 points). The boys with 142.5 points scored won by over a 45 point margin. Wheeling Central Catholic would again claim runner-up with 97 points while Bishop Donahue took the 3rd spot with 76.5 points.

 

Freshman D’Andra Swiger of Doddridge County scored 22.5 points as she won the 200m (28.29) and 400m (1:03.24). Swiger was also a member of Doddridge County’s winning 4 x 400m relay (4:28.19). Bethany Carroll won two events and added 20 points to the total. Carroll bested the field in the 1600m (6:08.76) and 3200m (12:57.83).

 

The most outstanding athlete for the girl’s region meet was senior Lacey Hampton of Bishop Donahue who gathered titles in 3 events and points in the shuttle hurdle relay. Hampton owned the hurdles winning the 100m hurdles in 15.69 and the 300m hurdles in 48.94. Hampton added the high jump to her medal count with a height of 5’-2”.

WV Region IV AA – Charleston.  Senior Jacob Rollo of Sherman and Concord University bound collected 4 individual Region IV AA titles as he led Sherman with a meet high 40 points to tie with Sissonville with 123 points. Poca made it interesting with 115 points and good enough for a solid 3rd place finish. Sissonville did not have a single individual win, but got their points from a total team effort.

 

Rollo won the 100m (11.25), 200m (23.29), high jump (6’-0”), and the long jump (19’-09.5”). Chase Nelson of Scott pulled off a double win in the 800m (2:09.26) and 1600m (4:50.64).

 

Poca with 156 points won the girls Region IV AA title with a landslide victory over 2nd place Wayne (103 points) and 3rd place Scott (88 points). Andrian Cunningham paced Poca with 22.5 points as she won the 100m hurdles in 17.02, the 300m hurdles in 48.09, and was a member of the winning shuttle hurdle relay team. Junior Shannon Rutherford led Wayne with a double victory in the 400m (1:00.89) and 800m (2:25.66).

 

Demi Kirk, senior from Sherman, scored 36 points by winning the 100m dash in 13.12 and the long jump in 14’-10.75”. Kirk also placed 2nd in the 200m dash (27.54) to her sister Donnie (27.33) and 2nd in the 400m in 1:03.81.

Farley Is A Triple Winner

WV Regiom III AA – Charleston. The Oak Hill girls led by senior Neaire Miller narrowly defeated Pikeview led by Mariah Farley for the Region III AA meet by a score of 135 – 126. Shady Spring placed 3rd in 94.50. Miller won both 800m (2:25.01), 1600m (5:27.84), and was a member of the winning 4 x 400m Oak Hill relay team.

 

Junior Mariah Farley of Pikeview pulled off  three wins to earn  region titles in the 100m hurdles (16.38), 300m hurdles (48.89) and the long jump (15’-09”) to provide her team with 30 individual points.

 

Greenbrier West shook off stiff competition from Webster County and Pikeview to take the region title.  Seniors Charles Propps and Nick White were solo winners in a total team effort. Propps won the 110m high hurdles in 15.91 and White ran to a victory in the 800m in 2:10.93.

 

Junior Dale Mitchell of Pikeview was a double winner in the 100m (11.45) and 200m (23.59). Scotty Treadway, sophomore, from Oak Hill was a double winner in the 1600m (4:51.09) and 3200m (10:36.32). Treadway added a relay win in the 4 x 800m (9:01.65) to gather a total of 22.5 points.

Freshman Welker from Frankfort wins 4 events

WV Region II AA  – Weston. Freshman Bria Welker of Frankfort won 4 events and led her team to a 10 point victory over 2nd place Keyser 94-84. Berkeley Springs finished a close 3rd with 82 points. Welker won all 3 sprint events (100m - 12.54, 200m - 26.79, and 400m - 59.36) and took the long jump (17-04.75”) by almost two feet.

Harlie Stotler, a freshman, from Berkeley Springs had a Milesplit National Elite throw of 40’-3.75” in the shot put. Junior Sarah McCauley of Philip Barbour won the 1600m (5:21.95) and the 3200m (11:45.52) for the meet’s only other double winner.

 Keyser took the boys Region II AA title on a total team effort gathering 121 points on only two individual titles and two relay events (Shuttle hurdles and 4 x 400m) wins. Berkeley Springs claimed the runner-up spot with 101 points and Liberty Harrison grabbed 3rd place with 73 points. Keyser runners Junior Peyton Harmon won the high jump with a height of 6’-04” and junior Tavern Rohrbuagh won the 800m run in 2:02.34.

Sophomore Brandon Franklin of Liberty Harrison was the most outstanding male athlete of the meet as he won all 3 dash events. Franklin cruised to wins in the 100m (11.15), 200m (22.74) and 400m (50.81).

Double winners were seniors Tristan Reneau of Grafton and Tyler Faulkiner of Philip Barbour. Reneau won both hurdle events as he raced to a 15.31 clocking in the 110m high hurdles and a 40.18 showing in the 300m hurdles. Faulkiner won the discus (136’ 10”) and the shot put (46’-05”)

 

WV Region I AA Recap Douglas McDaniel May 17, 2010

WV Region I AA - - Ellenboro. Ritchie County boys narrowly defeated the team from Magnolia by one point 107-106. Tyler Consolidated rounded out the top 3.  

#1 WV ranked discus and shot put athlete, junior Mark Britton, from Ritchie County led the team with two first place finishes. He threw the discus 167-03” and heaved the shot put 50’-03”. Fellow teammate and junior Cody Masters had a National Elite performance in the pole vault after clearing 14’ – 0”. Aaron Estep of Tyler Consolidated conquered the distance events by winning both the 1600m (4:43.31) and the 3200M (10:39.52).

For the girls, Weir held off Ritchie County with a 133-121 victory with Tyler Consolidated placing a strong 3rd. Junior Tricia Marker led Weir with two victories in the 1600m (5:41.80) and 3200m (12:15.36). Weir athletes won 7 different events. Leading 2nd place Ritchie County was Cheri Bunner, a senior, who took region titles in the 100m (13.19) and 200m (27.28). Bunner was also on the region champion 4 x 200m relay team from Ritchie County.

WV Region IV AAA  -- Parkersburg. In the most highly contested team championship of AAA, the Cabell Midland boys with 107 points took home another crown as they outpaced 2nd place Parkersburg (102 points) and 3rd place Winfield (101 points).

 

Leading the way for Cabell Midland was freshman Jacob Burcham with 30.5 points. The U.S. #1 ranked freshman, Burcham, won the 1600m in 4:33.76, which was well below his national best of 4:14.51, and the 3200m in 9:46.74. Burcham claimed 2nd in the 800m (1:58.49) to St. Albans Andy Bailey who posted the #1 800m time in West Virginia in 1:53.93 for a first team Gold Standard achievement.  Burcham added 2.5 points for his lead off leg in Cabell Midland’s winning 4 x 400m relay team (3:32.22).

WV Region III AAA Recap Douglas McDaniel May 17, 2010

WV Region III AAA - - Charleston.  Woodrow Wilson led by senior Moriah Njoku’s two victories in the 100m (13.04) and 200m (26.34) took the girls Region III AAA crown with 158 points to runner-up Nicholas County’s 109, and 3rd place finisher George Washington with 105 points. The Woodrow Wilson ladies claimed 4 of the 5 relay events to dominate the meet.

 Sophomore Morgan Kesecker of Nicholas County guided her 2nd place team by gathering 28 individual points in winning the 1600m (5:44.27) and 3200m (12:53.05), and by placing 2nd in the 800m (2:31.90). Leigh Poindexter, a junior, from George Washington won both the shot put (35’-02”) and discus (96’-07.5”).

 The George Washington boy’s team with 138 points turned in a solid team performance to easily win the region crown. Greenbrier East finished 2nd with 83 points and South Charleston was 3rd with 72.50 points. Senior Shaquille Williams (100m in 11.38) and Robert Thomas (800m in 2:06.78) were the lone individual winners for the champions. George Washington also claimed the 4 x 100m relay title in 44.45.

Raheem Waiters a senior from Riverside turned in the solo National Elite performance with a throw of 158’ 9” in the discus.

WV Region II AAA – Weston.  Karissa Knabenshue, a junior, led Buckhannon-Upshur to the Region II AAA championship by winning both throw events with National Elite performances. Knabenshue threw a personal best 126’1” in the discus and tossed the shot put 39’6.5”. Jefferson was 2nd with 118 points and Washington took 3rd with 66 points.

 Letitia Propst a junior from Elkins pulled off the distance triple in winning the 800m (2:20.21), 1600m (5:23.25) and 3200m (11:47.05).  Sophomore Jasmyn Hosby of Washington won both the 100m (12.58) and the 200m (25.91).

Hedgesville Senior boys with 121 points and led by senior Chris Deaner edged Jefferson (120 points) for the Region II AAA title. Deaner won two events with National Elite performances in the 300m high hurdles (39.26) and the high jump with a jump of 6’-6”. Runner-up Jefferson was led by Brandon Doughty who like Propst pulled off the distance triple by winning the 800m (1:58.32), 1600m (4:31.37) and 3200m (10:01.54). Freshman sensation Dante Price of Jefferson pulled off a sprint double win in the 100m dash in 11.40 and the 200m dash in 22.89. Elkins would claim 3rd place with 71 points.

There were a total of 7 Milesplit National Elites at the Region II AAA meet.

WV Region I AAA recap Douglas McDaniel May 17, 2010

WV Region I AAA – Wheeling. The host school of Wheeling Park took top honors in both the girls and boys team Region I  AAA championship.

The WheelingPark girls captured 110 points while Fairmont Senior took 2nd place with 101 points and John Marshall rounded out the top 3 with 99 points. Fairmont Senior had a couple of double winners. Chelsea Clark was a winner in the 3200m (12:07.94) and the 1600m (5:28.38). Alyssa Scherich took both the 110m hurdles (15.34) and the 300m hurdles (46.99).

Wheeling Park boys with 167 points slammed the field with a convincing win. John Marshall was 2nd with 97 points and Fairmont Senior was 3rd with 79. Junior Cody Pelliccioni of Morgantown was a double winner in the 800m and 1600m with times of 2:00.22 and 4:40.07 respectively. Christian Cummings a senior from Fairmont Senior threw to two regional championships by winning both the shot (47’-08”) and the discuss with a distance of 154’-1” for another Milesplit National Elite standard achievement.

There were a total of 4 Milesplit National Elites at the region meet.

Jacob Burcham Runs US #1 Freshman Best in 3200m and 1600m Douglas McDaniel May 01, 2010

Freshman Jacob Burcham of Cabell Midland established the new standard in the boys 3200m with a time of 9:20.34 at The Gazette / Friends of Coal Relays Friday evening at Charleston's Laidley Field.

UPDATE: On Saturday Burcham posted the fastest time in the U.S. for a freshman with a 4:14.51 1600m. He also clocked a 1:56.95 800m while finishing 3rd behind Jefferson's Brandon Doughty's 1:55.64 and Andy Bailey of St. Albans in 1:56.29. His 800m time currently is the 3rd best U.S. freshman time.
