Richwood Girls Cruise; Richwood Boys Win Tough Battle

 

WV Region III ACharleston. Richwood girls cruised to victory with 204 points, but the Richwood boys had a hard fought victory to sweep the Region III A titles. The Richwood ladies won 7 of the 17 events with only one double winner. 2nd place went to Pocahontas County with 92 points and 3rd went to Midland Trail with 56 points.

 

 

Breanna Mazella took both the 1600m (6:10.08) and the 3200m (14:04.79). Mazella placed 2nd in the 800m (2:51.19) and was a member of the winning 4 x 400m relay (4:48.63) to earn a total of 30.5 points. For some examples in domination, the Richwood ladies scored 21 points in the high jump, 20 points in the long jump, 20 in the 3200m, 18 in the 1600m, 18 in the 300m hurdles, 14 in the discus and 12 in the shot put.

 

The Richwood boys had a dog fight to the end with Pocahontas County with outstanding individuals on each side. Richwood brought home the title with 185 points, runner-up Pocahontas County had 180 points and Mount Hope placed 3rd with 56 points.

 

Senior Derrick Chaffin paced the Richwood boys with double wins in the 800m (2:06.50) and 1600m (4:44.20) and a third place finish in the 3200m for a total of 26 points. Teammate and junior David Taylor captured both the 110m high hurdles (17.29) and the 300m hurdles (43.31).

 

Tanner Graham, junior, from Pocahontas County scored the most in the meet with 28 points. Graham won the 200m (24.52), 400m (53.38) and placed 2nd in the 100m (12.32). Teammate and senior Abram Rittenhouse won the 3200m in 9:59.02, was edged out in the 1600m (4:44.54) by .34 seconds to earn the runner-up spot, and he took 2nd in the 800m (2:08.76) to score 26 points.
