A list of the top 10 ranked teams going into this meet which are competing at WakeMed Soccer Complex in Cary, North Carolina. Going into the West Virginia High School Track & Field State Tournament, which was held on May 18th-19th at Charleston Laidley Field, the Buckhannon-Upshur girls' track team were looking for a third straight team team championship. However, Morgantown's Coach Steve Blinco said at the beginning of the track season that he felt people were counting his team out. Blinco knew in his heart that the Mohigans would be in the hunt for the Team Championship. "We have a lot of young talent, but just don't count us out!" said Blinco.

Jacob Burcham and Victoria Cooke Take Individual Titles Morgantown Girls Set New Team Average Record of 19:36.0 The Jefferson boys pulled off the upset of the year by defeating favored Cabell-Midland in a race that came down to the wire. In the girl’s AAA race, Morgantown, led by freshman sensation Victoria Cooke’s sizzling 19:02.07, powered their way to victory over season-long rival University by a score of 38 to 55.

Sets WV#1 Time Ever at South Region     Cody Pelliccioni, senior from Morgantown, finished 7th and ran his personal best 5K in 15:04 at the Foot Locker South Regional held at McAlpine Greenway Park to punch his ticket to the Foot Locker Cross Country National Championships that will be held at Balboa Park in San Diego California on December 11.   Tthis is the fastest time by a WV runner in the history of the Foot Locker South Region. Justin Simpson of Oak Glen set the previous best mark in 2002 in 15:06.9 when he placed 7th and represented West Virginia at the Foot Locker National Meet. Pelliccioni is Quietly Making Some Noise Douglas McDaniel Oct 5, 2010

  Cody Pelliccioni, senior from Morgantown, is having an awesome season. On September 11, Pelliccioni placed 2nd at the Red, White & Blue Classic in Pittsburg, PA in 15:22. To prove it wasn't a fluke, he finished 3rd at the Great American Cross Country Festival this past Saturday in Cary, NC. with a personal best time of 15:14.40 and a WV #2 season best. The AAA boys race is shaping up to be a great race among several contenders.

CORRECTION: Cody Pelliccioni from Morgantown leads the rankings with an amazing 15:22 at the Red White and Blue Classic. This is a 4:57 mile pace! I apologize for not having this PA meet in the rankings when the article was published. This is the 25th fastest time in the Nation this year.   WV Runners is currently up to date with a few exceptions. I am still missing the Small school results from the Brunswick Invitational, the Judge Charles W. Woodward Relays from 9/7, and the Bob Creamer Memorial 3K from 9/4 which is a college meet at Wheeling Jesuit.   I will be glad to post small meets, college meets, and middle school meets along with the high school invitationals if you e-mail me the results.   Currently, Sarah McCauley of Philip Barbour leads the rankings for the girls with a 18:53 posted at the Chick-Fil-A. Letitia Propst of Elkins is narrowly in second with a 18:57.9 clocking at the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational.   Brandon Doughty, senior, from Jefferson leads the boys with a Milesplit first team elite time of 15:45 ran at the Interstate Classic. WV Region I AAA recap Douglas McDaniel May 17, 2010

WV Region I AAA – Wheeling. The host school of Wheeling Park took top honors in both the girls and boys team Region I  AAA championship. The WheelingPark girls captured 110 points while Fairmont Senior took 2nd place with 101 points and John Marshall rounded out the top 3 with 99 points. Fairmont Senior had a couple of double winners. Chelsea Clark was a winner in the 3200m (12:07.94) and the 1600m (5:28.38). Alyssa Scherich took both the 110m hurdles (15.34) and the 300m hurdles (46.99). Wheeling Park boys with 167 points slammed the field with a convincing win. John Marshall was 2nd with 97 points and Fairmont Senior was 3rd with 79. Junior Cody Pelliccioni of Morgantown was a double winner in the 800m and 1600m with times of 2:00.22 and 4:40.07 respectively. Christian Cummings a senior from Fairmont Senior threw to two regional championships by winning both the shot (47’-08”) and the discuss with a distance of 154’-1” for another Milesplit National Elite standard achievement. There were a total of 4 Milesplit National Elites at the region meet.

Anthony Abston a junior from Robert C. Bryd High School leaped to a Milesplit National Silver Elite 22’ 7” at the Harry Green State-Wide Invitational and sophomore Alexandri Allen of Morgantown set sail with another Silver Elite jump of 18’ 1” also at the Harry Green State-Wide Invitational. Marty Zangus of Weir set the new standard in the 300m high hurdles with a time of 40.86 at the Shadyside Relays. Khiry Timbers of Martinsburg posted the fastest 400m time in 49.74 at the John Handley Invitational. Mark Britton continues his torrid pace while setting another state best discus throw with a mark of 169’ 5” at the Ritchie County Pizza House Invitational. For the ladies, Karissa Knabenshue of Buckhannon-Upshur established the discus new mark with a throw of 122’ 5” at the Mylan Pharmaceuticals Invitational held on Tuesday. Kaitlyn Clark of Jefferson set the State’s best in the pole vault while clearing 10’ 0” at the Jefferson Tri Meet on Wednesday. Brandon Doughty of Jefferson posted the fastest 800m clocking in 1:57.2 at the Jefferson Tri Meet. Doughty now leads the rankings in the 800m, 1600m and 3200m.        

Pelliccioni Continues to Impress - Fastest Harrier of over 2,000+ Boys Douglas McDaniel Oct 4, 2009

Cody Pelliccioni, a junior, from Morgantown continues to dominate this 2009 Cross Country season. He has taken on all challenges and has come out on top. This past weekend, Morgantown traveled to the great State of New York and went head to head with some pretty good schools.  Pelliccioni took the McQuaid Invitational 3 mile AAA seeded race in 14:53 defeating Jay Boychuck of Ontario, Canada. Pelliccioni's time was the fastest of all competitors at the McQuaid Invitational which is a huge meet with 2,123 boys running in various 3 Mile races. To make it more amazing, Pelliccioni raced 4 days earlier in a conference meet.   Pelliccioni has had a season for the history books. Earlier in the year, Morgantown traveled to Pennsylvania and he took 2nd at the Red, White, and Blue Classic. Morgantown also traveled to Virginia and Pelliccioni took the crown at the Oatlands Invitational.   Do not be surprised if he continues to do great things in the future. He is a special talent.

Cabell Midland Moves to the Top of Team Rankings Douglas McDaniel Sep 30, 2009

Cabell Midland claims top team rankings for girls and boys. Some of the fast times were put up on the same course. As we get more into the season, a clearer picture will develop.   Jorden Thornton, a freshman from Cabell Midland, moved into the top 3 rankings with her 19:12.59 at the Adidas Saturday Night Lights  held at Centerville High School in Centerville, Ohio.   The Cabell Midland girls sit atop the WVRunners team standings with an average time of 20:13.93 for the top 5 runners.   Jefferson led by the top ranked runner, Alyssa Boucher, is in second, Hurricane is third, followed by University High School , Morgantown , and Preston     As with all Cross Country rankings, it is not an exact science as courses and conditions are different for each meet.   2009 High School Girls Team Rankings.       WVRunners team rankings for boys have Cabell Midland, led by freshman Jacob Burcham, on top with an average time of 16:46 for their top 5 runners.       Jefferson is in 2nd place with an average time of 17:08. Jefferson is led by the 3rd ranked boy, Brandon Doughty, a junior. Doughty has constantly put up faster times each week as he raced to a 5th place finish in 16:12 at the Oatlands Invitational .       Our current boy leader Cody Pelliccioni, junior from Morgantown, won the Oatlands race in 15:49 as he continues to dominate this Cross Country season.   The rest of the boy’s team rankings show Fairmont Senior in 3rd place followed by University High School, Preston, Berkeley Springs, and Morgantown.     2009 High School Boys Team Rankings

Slow Week - Fast Times Douglas McDaniel Sep 23, 2009

The past weekend may have been a slow week as far as the number of meets, but the times posted were not slow.   Cody Pelliccioni, a junior from Morgantown, followed up his win at the Red, White, and Blue Classic with another dominating performance at the Mountaintop Combo held at Preston High School in Kingwood. Pelliccioni, posting a 16:23, ran away from the field in convincing fashion for a 23 second victory over 2nd place finisher Dayton McVicker  (16:46) of Fairmont Senior.   Lydia Martinelli, a senior from University High School, was just as impressive as she took first place honors at the Mountaintop Combo with a 34 second victory in 20:17 over Molly Summers of Grafton who crossed the finish line in 20:51.   Moving into the #2 spot for the girl’s rankings is Sami Harris a freshman from Charleston Catholic with her victory at the Battle Run Invitational held at Nicholas County Cross Country course in Summersville. Running 3 days later in the Ripley Covered Bridge Invitational she took 2nd place in 20:11 to Maggie Drazba, a freshman, of St. Marys. Drazba took top honors with her winning time of 20:02. Drazba has had several top finishes this year including an earlier victory in the A/AA race at the Geico Classic.   Forest Festival, held in Elkins, showcased several of the top ranked runners for the year and it did not disappoint.  Alex Dent , a senior from Hurricane, and the #3 ranked girl won the big invitational against some stiff competition with a time of 21:09. 2008 West Virginia State Cross Country Championship Recaps Douglas McDaniel Nov 3, 2008

  Pictured is AAA champion Cody Pelliccioni   The WV 2008 State Cross Country Championship held in Ona, WV at Cabell Midland High School had a few surprises, a few expectations, and one Status Quo. Overall there were 19 National Elites as recognized by Milesplit, there was one State course record, and there was a repeat individual champion. It was a warm and beautiful day for running and the amazing performances put on by the harriers of West Virginia were evident.   Be sure to check out all of the links to athletes, teams, photos (WV 2008 State XC Photo Album), and more embedded in the article.   We will start with the AA-A boys race which got things started.

Alex Dent of Hurricane leads the way for high school girls with her 18:55.38 5K performance at the Rio Grande Invitational held on 9/27/2008 at Rio Grande, Ohio. NTN Pre-Season Rankings Nike Press Release Aug 16, 2007

Nike has released their pre-season Nike Team National (NTN) Rankings. Wheeling Park boys and Morgantown girls are recognized as bubble teams just outside of the top 10 in the Southeast. The Southeast region consist of Alabama, Deleware, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennesee, Virginia, and West Virginia. Click on the article for the rankings list.

Top ranked Midlo squads survive scares in opener Brandon Miles Sep 10, 2006

The state\'s top ranked boys and girls teams from Midlothian both survived scares at the Great Meadows Invitational in their opening races. The Nike Team Nationals Southeast #1 ranked squad in Midlothian ran well as shown by their low team total of 55 points in the competitive meet, but the NTN SE #6 ranked and two-time defending AA state champions Brentsville proved to be just as good as they finished two points shy of them in second place with 57 points. Midlothian junior Jason Witt took the individual title in a time of 16:03.15. Meanwhile, the Midlothian girls had two of their seven runners drop out of the race including top returnee and 4:53 miler M.C. Miller yet their amazing depth and talent was showcased still in dominating the #2 ranked team in the state and #5 ranked team in the NTN Southeast region in Brentsville by a 65 point margin of victory. The Lady Trojans were led by the Lautzenheiser twins, Kathleen (1st, 19:20.92) and Leia (3rd, 19:46.59), as the freshmen pair finished first and third respectively. NTN Southeast Region Report: Week #1 Brandon Miles Aug 27, 2006

First week of action in the Nike Team Nationals Southeast Region included races from pre-season ranked boys (SE#10) and girls squads (SE#9) from Chapel Hill as both won their opening races of the season in impressive fashion, while other bubble teams made names for themselves such as South Carolina\'s Mauldin girls.

Competing at the Nike Outdoor Nationals is an honor for any track and field athlete. West Virginia was represented by four outstanding athletes with national credentials. Even though the athletes may be disappointed in their performances, we are all proud of them for their contributions to track and field and know this experience will make them better competitors and individuals.

Dalzot Qualifies for National Track Championships WV Flyers Press Release Apr 22, 2006

Maria Dalzot of Morgantown qualified for the United States of America Track & Field Junior National Championships at the Larry Ellis Invitational in Princeton, New Jersey late Friday night with a time of 17:49 for 5 kilometers. The qualifying time for the national championships was 17:55 so Dalzot easily achieved the standard in her second attempt at the distance. Dalzot placed 11th among 29 college and post-college runners and had the good fortune of being in a pack of runners from Syracuse, Columbia and Princeton who were attempting to hit the Big East Conference qualifier of 17:53 which helped pull her along to an 18 second personal record for the distance. Dalzot said \"I was one second over pace at two miles but was feeling confident that I could drop the pace over the final mile. I\'m thrilled with how I raced and I\'m even happier with the time.\" After a 5:45 first mile and 5:46 second, a 5:35 last mile proved she ran a very smartly paced race.

As of this afternoon (4/13/06) the WVSSAC office has informed me that NO West Virginia High School athlete representing their High School can participate in a non-WVSSAC approved event (which basically is only the events held at the state meet). 2005 AAA 3200m State Champion, Maria Dalzot, from Morgantown will be competing Sunday in the 2 mile run at the National Scholastic Indoor Championship (NSIC). The NSIC is held at the New York Armory in New York, New York. 2005 AAA 1600m State Champion, Kaylen Christopher, of Preston will be competing in the 1 mile run at the Nike Indoor National Championship (NIN) held at the Prince George Sports and Learning Center in Landover Maryland.. Also competing Sunday at the Nike National meet is 2005 AAA Long Jump champion Sam Crosby of Riverside. Let\'s wish them all good luck. (If I have missed any, please let me know.)
