Maggie Drazba, a junior distance standout at St. Marys High School, placed seventh in the High School Girls’ 3000-meter run in a new PR of 9:55.66 at the Penn Relays Carnival on Thursday, April 26th, 2012 at Franklin Field in Philadelphia, PA.
Junior Sophie Chase of Lake Braddock High School, Va. won the 3,000-meter run in US#4 9:37.86, winning by five seconds over senior Tori Gerlach of Pennridge High School, PA and with teammate Hannah Christen (sophomore) who just got edged out for third for an impressive 1-3 finish. Megan Lacy of Cherokee, NJ was fourth, Meghan McGovern of North Penn, PA was fifth, Jaimie Phelan of St. Mary’s, ONT was sixth, and Maggie Drazba finished seventh out of twenty-five high school girls. Seventeen seconds separated first through seventh place.
Drazba is the defending WV State Champion in the 800m (2:24.32), 1600m (5:14.08), and 3200m (11:07.47), last summer she placed second in the two mile run at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals in a new PR of 11:03.77. This past fall, on October 29th, 2011, she won the West Virginia A-AA Girls’ State Cross Country Championships in course record time of 18:25.40 at Cabell Midland High School, and then in November she was announced as WV Runners 2011 cross country female athlete of the year. November 26th, 2011 she placed thirteenth and ran a new PR of 17:40.00 at the Foot Locker South Regional Cross Country Championships held at McAlpine Greenway Park in Charlotte, NC. January 20th, 2012 Drazba was announced the 2011-12 Gatorade West Virginia Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year. February 11th Drazba was the National Runner-Up in the junior women division 6K at the USATF Cross Country Championships at Forest Park Central Fields in St. Louis, MO. She ran the 6k course in a time of 21:07.7. February 18th during the indoor track season, Maggie won the 3200-meter run at the Akron Rubber City Open HS Meet, while running a PR of 10:41.20. March 17th while representing the US at the NACAC Cross Country Championships, Drazba placed fourth in the Junior Women's 4k race with a time of 14:11.70. April 13th Drazba ran a US#5 best time and new West Virginia state record of 4:51.88 in the high school girls’ 1600-meter run at the Pizza House Invitational being held at the Ritchie County High School Track in Ellenboro, WV.
Maggie Drazba is now considered by some to be the best West Virginia prep high school distance runner of all time.
