Winfield Boys, Buckhannon-Upshur Girls Win at Capital City Classic

The Winfield High School boys track team won nine events and the team title, while Buckhannon-Upshur’s Emily Godwin won four events to help the girls’ team to a first place finish at Friday’s Capital City Classic.

Winfield boys received first from Sam Pyles in the 400m and 800m run, Joseph Kirtner in the 3200m run, Luke Martin in the 110m and 300m hurdles, Christian Smith in the high jump, and Chris Cochran in the pole vault. Winfield boys also won the 4 x 800m relay of (Cody Honaker, Sam Pyles, Logan Rumbaugh, and Stone Bellomy), the 4 x 110m shuttle hurdle relay of (Luke Martin, Dylan Webb, Anthony Bady, and Ronnie Beale). That evening, the Winfield boys track team broke three meet records.

Buckhannon-Upshur finished in second behind Sean Anderson’s Generals. Senior Shaquille Lofton placed second in the 100m dash, first in the 200m dash, and second in the 400m dash.

“Our strength lies in our senior runners, Luke Martin in the hurdle events, Sam Pyles in the sprints/mid distance, and Joseph Kirtner in the distance events,” said Winfield boys coach Shawn Anderson.

The Winfield boys were WV Track & Field State Champions in the AA boys’ during 1997-1998 and 2004-2008. Winfield High School was bumped up to Class AAA five years ago; they are a small AAA school trying to step up and become State Champions once again.

Buckhannon-Upshur 2011 WV AAA Champions

On the girl’s side, the Buckhannon-Upshur High School Buccaneer girls track & field team continued their dominance by winning an impressive eight meets in a row on Friday. The Lady Bucs are the two- time defending West Virginia High School AAA Girls Track & Field State Champions.

Winfield High School finished second behind the Lady Bucs. Barkley Castro won the 800m run, Allie Perry won the pole vault, and the Lady Generals’ dominated the 4x100m, 4x200m, and 4x400m relays, breaking the meet record in all three events.

Junior Emily Godwin earned high point honors for the meet. She won the 400m run, the 100m hurdles, the high jump, and the long jump, while breaking meet records in all four events. Godwin has now run nine meets, winning gold in 31 out of 33 events. Her two losses came in the 800m run to Kelly Humphreys of North Marion at the Bridgeport Home Meet I, and to Tori Dent of Hurricane at the Teays Physical Therapy Invitational. Godwin is a very special talent and would be considered by many to be the best overall female athlete in all West Virginia Track & Field. Godwin is currently ranked US#8 for indoors and US#7 for outdoors in the high jump.

Other B-U teammates who won gold: Junior Abby Lantz in the 200m dash, sophomore MacKenzie Leigh in the shot put and discus throw, and the 4 x 102.5 shuttle hurdle relay team.

The Lady Bucs are coached by Jackie Zuliani who has received coach of the year honors.
