Carrier Posts BIG EAST Standards

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Senior Chelsea Carrier led the West Virginia University track and field team this afternoon after posting three BIG EAST Championship qualifying standard finishes at the WVU Holiday Classic.

The Buckhannon, W.Va., native earned her first qualifying time with a first-place showing in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.52. She then returned later in the afternoon to post her second and third qualifying standards with a second-place finish in the 200-meter dash (25.45) and a first-place finish in the high jump (1.70-meters).

Junior sprinter Chené Townsend also competed well for the Mountaineers, as she posted a first-place showing in the 60-meter dash (7.90) and a second-place showing in the 60-meter hurdles (9.03).

Freshman sprinter Shakiyla Cosby made her WVU debut with a first-place showing in the 400-meter dash with a time of 59.66, while senior Brittany Wolford finished second in the 500-meter, crossing the line at 1.20.23.

Carrier, Cosby, Wolford and Jordann Mitchell ended the afternoon, as they stepped up in the 4x400-meter relay to take first place with a time of 3.59.93.

In field events, junior Lindsay Kopenhaver and freshman Kaitlyn Shelar shared the top spot in the pole vault after clearing 3.35 meters.

The Mountaineers will break for the holidays and are set to return to action on Jan. 8, at the Penn State Relays in University Park, Pa.
