Danielle Pye's first place finish helped lead Concord to the WVIAC women's cross country title.
(GLENVILLE, W.Va.)---Danielle Pye captured the individual title with a 6K time of 23:14 to help lead Concord to the school's first WVIAC women's cross country championship. Chelsea Callaway (5th) and Tabatha Whited (8th) also added top ten finishes for the Lady Lions.
CU's team total of 49 easily outdistanced runners-up Seton Hill and Wheeling Jesuit, which finished with 75 points each. Alderson-Broaddus and eight-time defending champion West Virginia Wesleyan ended with 91 points each.
Seton Hill senior Anna Cote placed second in the individual race at 23:25, followed three seconds later by Alderson-Broaddus' Ashley Teets. 2009 meet winner Sherry Borsos was fourth at 23:34.
West Virginia Wesleyan's Jordan McDonald, a graduate of North Marion HS, was the highest placing freshman after leading the Bobcats with a 24:03 time and seventh place finish.
Concord head coach Mike Cox was thrilled following his team's first championship. "I knew we could do it. We avoided putting a lot of pressure on them. We ran our race and let things take care of themselves."
Cox, who was named the WVIAC Coach of the Year, reflected on his program's rise. "It's unbelievable. We haven't been very good for so long and it's great to be going in the right direction. The girls have worked their butts off and all of the credit belongs to them. I'm on cloud nine."
Many WVIAC squads will be back action in two weeks for the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional at Cary, North Carolina.
