On Sunday March 11, 2012 the next version of a high school dream mile takes place at The Armory Track & Field Center in New York, NY. Two of the biggest names in high school distance running, Edward Cheserek and Jacob Burcham, will lead a talented field in the Big Apple.

Junior Edward Cheserek from St. Benedict's Prep out of Newark, NJ comes into the meet as the odds on favorite to win the mile and challenge Alan Webb's national high school indoor mile record of 3:59.86. At the New Balance Games on January 21, 2012, Cheserek set the national high school record for juniors in the mile with a time of 4:02.21 on the exact same New York Armory track. As a sophomore Cheserek ran a 4:03.29 mile to finish 4th at the addidas Grand Prix. This past cross country season, Cheserek added the title, National Champion, to his resume when he won the Foot Locker Cross Country Nationals with a time of 14:51.50.

Jacob Burcham of Cabell Midland High School from Ona West Virginia is a serious challenger to upset Cheserek. The 5 time West Virginia state champion recently ran a 4:07.20 mile at the Brooks PR Invitational held in Seattle Washington and was nipped at the line by Marcus Dickson from Buckley Washington. As a sophomore, Burcham placed 7th at the IAAF World Youth Championships in Lille, France on July 10, 2011 in the 1500m with a time of 3:46.55 which was a new American high school sophomore record. The old record stood for 33 years. Jeff Warwick of Florida had the record of 3:48.0 set back in 1978.
