Richwood Girls Dominate, Pocahontas Deemed Victor in Boys Meet

The Richwood High School girls rolled over the competition at the Region III A meet placing first in 12 of the 18 track and field events, and winning the overall meet in 243 points, 189 more points than second place Pocahontas County High School (84 points).  The boy’s side was flip-flopped.  The Pocahontas boys came out on top with 202 points, while Richwood placed second with 148 points.

 

Breanna Mazzella led the way for the Richwood girls placing first in all three individual distance races.  She won the 800 meter run in 2:45.40, the 1600 meter run in 6:03.39, and the 3200 meter run in 14:31.08.  Also helping out the Richwood girls were Haley Hinchman, Jamie Bailey, and Morgan Mullens.  Hinchman won the 100 meter hurdles (17.55) and the 300 meter hurdles (52.86).  Bailey came out on top in the High Jump (4-10.00).  Mullens won the Long Jump (14-02.00).  Olivia Banks, a senior from Williamson High School won both the 100 meter dash (13.44) and the 200 meter dash (28.56).  Richwood also won 4 or the 5 relay races (4x200, 4x400, 4x800, and 4x102.5 Shuttle Hurdles).  Sophomore Allsion Gilkerson of Meadow Bridge High  School out threw the competition in the Shot Put (28-11.00) and the Discus (84-11).

On the boys side it was Tanner Graham and Evan Rose leading the charge and helping the Pocahontas County High School boys team to reach the top podium spot at the region meet.  Graham won the 200 meter dash (23:39) and the 400 meter dash (52.64).  Evan Rose won the Shot Put (45-03.00) and the Discus (131-06.75).  The Pocahontas boys also came out on top in the 4x200 meter relay (1:38.65), the 4x400 meter relay (3:44.47), and the 4x800 meter relay (10:02.62).  Another notable performance at the Region III meet came from Richwood Sophomore Andrew Shaffer.  Shaffer won the 800 (2:09.57), the 1600 (5:01.12), and the 3200 (11:01.62)
