Region I A-AA – Wheeling Central Catholic claimed both girls and boys Region I A-AA titles. The girls were led by Jessica John’s 2nd place finish in 20:41. The Wheeling Central girls (59) won in a close race over 2nd place finishing team of St. Mary’s (66). Hannah Kinney of Trinity Christian was the individual region champion with her 11 second victory in 20:30.
Ronald Read of Weir took the top prize in the boys 5K race in impressive fashion by 27 seconds with a time of 16:40. Edgell Cuylor of Doddridge County placed 2nd in 17:07. Robert Bonenberger came in 3rd leading the Wheeling Central Catholic boys to the region title over 2nd place Doddridge County by a score of 55-73.
Advancing to the State meet are the girls teams of Wheeling Central Catholic, St. Mary’s and Doddridge County, and the boys teams of Wheeling Central, Doddridge County, and Weir.
Region I AAA – University girls and Wheeling Park boys took home the top prizes at the Group AAA Region I meet. University placed 4 girls in the top ten and outpaced 2nd place Preston by a margin of 44-56. Ari Kasprowicz of Preston won the region champion designation with a time of 19:37 by destroying the field by a 55 second margin. Courtney Yeager of Wheeling Park was 2nd in 20:32. Jordan McDonald of North Marion was 3rd in 20:49. Leading the first place team of University was Sarah Martinelli in 21:12. Lydia Martinelli (6th), Jennifer Van Der Sloot (9th), Allsion Kimble (10th), and Katelyn Wheeler (15th) secured the victory.
Cody Pelliccioni of Morgantown outclassed the field with a 28 second victory to claim the title of Region I AAA individual cross-country champion. Wheeling Park (63 points) led by 3rd place finisher, Kyle Gramlich (17:48) and 4th place runner, Logan Wojcik (17:52) won the meet over 2nd place finisher Preston (85 points). David Ciarolla of Fairmont Senior grabbed the runner-up designation with a time of 17:42.
Advancing to the State meet are the girl teams of University, Preston, and Morgantown, and the boy teams of Wheeling Park, Preston, and Fairmont Senior.
