Southern Track Classic Coverage May 13, 2007

The stars came out for a 7th time for THE CLASSIC!    With plenty of the pre-meet hype centered around Sean Holston and the long jump girls, it was Adams Abuldarazaaq (pictured above by John Herzog) who made the greatest impression in Friday night's Southern Track Classic in a double victory in the boys' hurdles. The Highland Springs and indoor state champion in the 55 meter hurdles, broke two tough meet records in the 110 (14.09) and 300 (38.11) meter hurdles with his state leading performances of 14.04 and 37.79 respectively. However, there were plenty of crowd pleasers along with Abdulrazaaq as Catherine White became the first athlete ever to win three years in a row at STC in the same event as she became a three-time STC two mile champion (10:50.89) after doubling back from a 4:54.33 mile victory. Sean Holston improved his US top 5 time in the 400 with a US #3 46.47 clocking to shatter the meet record. More highlights and additional coverage to come on Saturday as the state leaderboard was given a full facelift with a total of 14 NEW state leading performances with an equal number of 7 each for both boys and girls!   COMPLETE RESULTS! Select Photo Gallery of Friday Night's Winners by John Herzog - Preview of plenty more photos to come from John Herzog, David Fleenor, and Brandon Miles. Video interview by Brandon Miles with Friday night's breakthrough star at the Southern Track Classic in Highland Springs senior Adams Abdulrazaaq. The AAA indoor state champion in the 55 meter hurdles had one of the best meets out of any of the athletes at STC in winning both the 110 and 300 meter hurdles races in meet record times of 14.04 and 37.79 respectively, which are easily state best times in both events.

Can White become the first 3-time STC champion? Photo by John Herzog Where does one begin in analyzing such a loaded meet as the 2007 Southern Track Classic. Sean Holston brings the most star power as the defending national champion indoors for 200 and 400 meters. The Robert E. Lee senior will be competing only in the 400 meter dash at Southern Track Classic as he looks to improve upon his US #3 time of 46.55 and go well under the 2002 meet record of 47.24. However, bigger history could be on Friday night by Northside senior Catherine White as she potentially could become the first athlete in Southern Track Classic meet history to win an event at Virginia's most elite meet for three consecutive years in the two mile run. Unlike her wins in 2005 and 2006 at STC in the deuce, she will have to do it the hard way this year in doubling back from the mile and facing several legit sub 11 two milers.

Southern Track Classic Preview - Field Events May 10, 2007

Attack of the Long Jump Chicks! Photos by John Herzog  The seventh edition of the Southern Track Classic expects to be one of the best ever with roughly ten events to have their meet records tested with the outstanding fields that meet director Dan Ward has assembled for Friday night at Sports Backers Stadium in Richmond, Virginia. Field events begin at 5:00 PM and the running events will start up at 6:15 PM with the sprint medley relays as a rolling time schedule follows. Better not stroll into Sports Backers after 6 or you will have missed some of the best action in the meet. The most exciting and spectacular event at the 2006 Classic was found in the girls’ triple jump with four girls over 40 feet recording US top 10 marks. The best event at this year’s meet looks to be among the girls in the jumping events once again, but in the long jump instead in 2007 with the likes of defending champion and meet record holder Brittni Finch of Centreville, national champion Shakia Forbes of Bethel, and Dogwood meet record holder April Sinkler of Brooke Point.
