WV State Meet Results, Elite Performances and Write-ups Added

State Meet Results and elite performances have been added. Jasmine Cotten of Fayetteville re-writes the record book by large margins in the 100m, 400m, and long jump. Several others broke State Meet records including Kaylyn Christopher. After checking all of the results a complete write-up will come this afternoon.

Girls Class A Summary

Jasmine Cotten of Fayetteville was the most outstanding performer of the meet as she recorded 36 points and established new All-Time best performances in three different events. Cotten shattered the long jump mark by almost two feet. Her leap of 17'10.25" bettered the previous mark of 15' 10.75" which was set by Amanda Horrocks of Midland Trail in 2003. In her closest contested event of the day, Cotten won the 100m dash easily with a margin of .37 seconds as she clocked the all-time record in the 100m with a time of 12.42. Cotten's performance in the 400m was the highlight of the day as she destroyed the field and the old State Meet record with a lightning fast time of 56.84. The previous State meet record of 59.07 set last year by Zantanna Murray of Richwood was left in the dust as was the field with the 2nd place finisher coming in 6 seconds behind the uncommitted senior. Cotten recorded 6 more points for her team as she placed 3rd in the 800m with a time of 2:28.85.

As spectacular as Cotten was, the Doddridge County girl's team took care of business with a well balanced attack. In the field events, the lady Bulldogs scored 34 points, added 26 points in running events, and another 26 points in the relay events. Alicia Cayton and Kayla Todd went 1-2 in the Shot Put with throws of 38'4" and 37'11.5" Amanda Napolitani won the discus with a throw of 112' 0" and Kayla Todd took 3rd as she helped the team with a total of 14 points. The 4 x 400 m relay team of Megan Kelly, Brandi Bowen, Elizabeth Dean, and Kylee Boring brought home the other first place finish with a time of 4:19.73..

Boys Class A Summary.

The Doddridge County boy's team made it a clean sweep for the Bulldogs as they took first place with 91 points edging Williamstown by 7 points. Whoever said you can't win a big meet with a distance team had never seen a dominant 1-2 combination that the Bulldogs unleashed (no pun intended). David Orejuela and Levi Grandt scored 28 and 24 points respectively and added 10 more team points on the winning 4 x 800m relay team. Orejuela, a senior, took first in the 1600m in 4:29.48 while Grandt, a junior, took 2nd in 4:30.18. In the 3200m, it was Grandt claiming the first prize medal with a winning time of 9:44.10 while Orejuela took 2nd place more than 20 seconds back. Orejuela showed why he was the most dominant male athlete in Single A as he took his second first place medal in the 800m run in 2:00.46. Orejuela won by a three second margin and his distance specialist teammate of Grandt grabbed 3rd place with a time of 2:04.17.

Senior Brandon Belcher of Williamstown set a new State record in the 200m in 22.24 by .4 seconds as he held off sophomore Robert Beach of Clay-Battelle by .3 seconds. Beach's time also bettered the previous State Meet record. Charleston Catholic's 4 x 400m relay team of Luke Miller, Brian Masteller, David Matherly, and Robbie Sherrard set a new standard of 3:34.36 bettering the mark set two years ago by Williamstown. In the 4x110 meter shuttle hurdle, Williamstown set a new state meet best in 59.45 taking the record from the 2004 Williamstown team. Clint Wilson, a junior, from Bishop Donahue set the new high jump mark by 2 inches with his jump of 6-04". Seth Beckner, a junior, from Buffalo set the new standard for the pole vault with a vault of 13'06" .

Girls Class AA Summary

In the hotly and closely contested Girl's AA State Meet, the Weir lady Red Raiders scored 77 points and edged Winfield by two points and Berkeley Springs by 5 points. Ayreal Thompson led Weir with two individual first place finishes in the 100m (12.58) and the 200m (25.98) and helped her team win two relay events in the 4 x 100m (50.82) and 4 x 200m (1:46.46).

The most outstanding performer in Class AA for the girls was Meghan Mock a sophomore from Berkeley Springs. Mock took three first place prizes; a 4th place finish and set a State meet record in the high jump. Mock's high jump record of 5-06.00 eclipsed the 7 year old record of 5'-05.5 set by Mary Green of Richwood in 1999. Mock also claimed first places in the long jump with a leap of 17'-01.25' and the 300m low hurdles with a time of 45.18. Moch displayed her athletic versatility by competing and placing 4th in the 800m with a time of 2:25.41 and only 2 seconds out of first place won by Lisa Day of Winfield in 2:23.28.

Two other State Meet records fell during the Double AA events and they were the 4 x 400m relay team of Oak Glen in 4:02.88 smashing the 7 year record of 4:09.26 set by Doddridge County in 1999. Jordann Mitchell, a junior, from Oak Glen broke the16 year old record in the 400m with a time of 57.48. Mitchell also led her team first in the 4 x 400m, she took 2nd in the 100m and was on the state runner-up 4 x 200m relay team.

Boys Class AA Summary

There weren't any state records broken in the boy's class AA division, but there were plenty of elite performances as the Winfield Generals ran away from the competition with 132 points. Ravenswood placed a distant 2nd with 85 points. Andrew Benford of Ravenswood had the most individual points as he tallied 24. Benford, a senior, headed to the University of Richmond placed first in the 1600m in 4:29.52, 1st in the 3200m in 9:30.47, and 4th in the 800m with a time of 2:00.82.

Most of the scoring centered on the Generals of Winfield as they claimed 1st place medals in 7 events. Wayne Pritt led the way with 20 individual points and helped his team gain 20 additional points with two first place finishes in relay events. Pritt claimed state titles in the 100m in 10.94, 200m in 22.60, anchored the winning 4 x100m relay team in 44.63, and anchored the winning 4 x 200m relay team in 1:34.58. Junior Zach Noel scored 16pts in the 1600m and 3200m as he placed 2nd behind Benford in each event. Noel's times were 4:33.52 and 9:31.58 respectively. Drew Barnett, a senior, won the 110m high hurdles in 15.28 and anchored the state winning 4 x 110 shuttle hurdle with a combined time of 59.61. Jordan Kessler, a senior, claimed 1st place in the pole vault with a vault of 12'-06".

Girls Class AAA Summary

Cabell Midland of Ona crushed the field by 23 points as the Knights posted 81 points to runner-up Parkersburg's 58 points. Preston placed 3rd with 46 points and Buckhannon-Upshur finished 4th with 40 points all tallied by one individual.

The balanced Cabell Midland team was paced by freshman Danielle Winningham. Winningham placed 2nd in the 400m in 58.35, 2nd in the 800m in 2:18.54, anchored the state champion 4 x 400m relay team with a team time of 4:03.18, and she ran the lead off leg of the state runner-up 4 x 800m relay team in 9:40.39. The lady knights went 1-2 in the shot put with junior Ashley Morrow (37'07.50") and senior Megan Scites (36'09.75").2nd place Parkersburg was led by senior Miranda Richards who earned all-state in 3 events (pole vault, 100m, and 200m). Parkersburg also captured the 4 x 102m shuttle hurdle in 1:06.12.

There were several outstanding athletes with 3 state records broken. Kaylyn Christopher, a junior, of Preston, and junior Chelsea Carrier of Buckhannon-Upshur put on a show. Christopher claimed 3 state titles and set two all-time state records. Christopher placed first in the 800m in 2:16.38 and set state records in the 1600m (5:00.18) and the 3200m (10:55.52). Shattering the 11 minute mark for the 3200m is a great accomplishment. Both the 1600m and 3200m records were held by Holly Hunter a 2000 graduate of East Fairmont. Carrier, participated in four events and won them all while setting a new state record in the 300m low hurdles in 44.57. The previous record was held by Genita Dickey of Huntington in 1997. Carrier swept all of the sprint events as she took 1st in the 100m (12.48), 1st in the 200m (25.45), and 1st in the 400m (58.12). Kristen Loughry, senior, of Hurricane is worth mentioning as she scored 34 points for the Redskins. Loughry won the 100m high hurdles in 14.84, she was first in the pole vault with a vault of 10'-00", she was 2nd in the 300m low hurdles in 44.73, and claimed 3rd place in the 100m dash in 12.66.

Boys Class AAA Summary

The Jefferson Cougars led by senior sprinter Josh Brown took the first place trophy with 69 points. Wheeling Park claimed the 2nd place prize with 57 points and Cabell Midland took 3rd place honors with 54 points. The Cougars claimed 5 state titles and Brown had his hand (or feet) in four of them. Brown performed a clean sweep of the sprints as he won the 100m dash in 10.77, the 200m in 21.90, and 400m in 49.52. Brown also anchored the state winning 4 x 100m relay with a 2006 state's best time of 43.50. The Cougars also set the 2006 best time in winning the 4 x 200m relay in 1:30.90.

Even though there weren't any new state meet records in the boy's Triple A division there were plenty of top performers. Josh Feather a junior of Preston was a double winner in the distance events winning the 1600m in 4:31.13 and claiming his 2nd state title in the 3200m in 9:51.78. Jordan Jackson a junior from Martinsburg was a double winner as he won the high jump with a jump of 6'08" on less misses than Matt Wilson of Bridgeport and the long jump with a leap of 21'-05.75" bettering the field by over 5 inches. The high jump marks by Jackson and Wilson were 2006 state best marks in the high jump. State favorites Keith Branch of Buckhannon-Upshur and Travis Coleman of R.C. Byrd won the discus (162'07") and shot put (54-09.25) respectively. Wheeling Park's Andy Goldbaugh set the season's best time in the 300m hurdles with a quick time of 39.00. Dwight Holden of R.C. Byrd established the season's best time in the 110m high hurdles in 14.63. Cabell Midland's 4 x 800m relay team set the season's best time in 8:13.47.
