Griffins Claim WVIAC Men's Cross Country Championship

 

PIPESTEM, W. Va. – The Seton Hill men’s cross country team won the 2011 WVIAC Championship Saturday morning at Pipestem.

In the closest of margins, the Griffins won the 2011 men’s cross country championship. SHU registered 44 points while Wheeling Jesuit finished with 45. West Virginia Wesleyan’s 50-point total earned the team the bronze medal.

Concord was fourth (130) and Alderson-Broaddus’ 143 points rounded out the top five. Glenville State recorded 201 points for sixth while Fairmont State (205) and Ohio Valley (206) were right behind the Pioneers.

Davis & Elkins 232 points were good enough for ninth. West Liberty (242) and Bluefield State (347) completed the field.

The Cardinals’ Stewart Jones won the meet with a time of 26:05.74. Teammate Dustin Hall was four seconds behind Jones, taking the silver. The Bobcats’ Nate Edwards was third after crossing in 26:37.94. Dom Camasso (SHU) finished in 26:29.28 and WVWC’s Skyler McCoy had a time of 26:43.20 for fifth.

The Griffins’ Jon Bogert (26:45.06) and Justin Weaver (26:49.96) were sixth and seventh, respectively. The Bobcats’ Barry Franklin (26:54.59) was eighth. WJU’s Luke Holubeck was ninth (27:05.39) and Glenville State’s Dustin Wood placed 10th (27:17.80). All 10 earned first-team all-conference honors.

West Virginia Wesleyan’s Jesse Skiles was named the WVIAC men’s cross country Coach of the Year. Stewart Jones was the Runner of the Year while the Griffins’ Chris LaCava was the Freshman of the Year. LaCava took 12th with a time of 27:29.54.
