Berkeley Springs Girls Win Close AA Contest

Tyler Consolidated Earns Runner-up Spot

Heading into state meet as many as eight teams had a legitimate shot at winning the AA girls team title.

After the smoke cleared on Saturday afternoon, Berkeley Springs walked away with the championship as they snuck past Tyler Consolidated and Oak Glen. Much like the Doddridge boys and their quest for the team title, Berkeley Springs had just one individual champion as junior thrower  Harlie Stotler captured titles in both shot put and discus. Berkeley Springs’ depth was the deciding factor.

Berkeley Springs got a pair of second place finishes from Casey Solomon in high jump and Toni Davison in pole vault.

The outcome of high point for AA girls was similar to the team race as six girls were within three and a points of each other.

At the end, Poca’s Adrian Cunningham walked away the individual honor as she beat out Oak Glen’s Alexis Burch, Philip Barbour’s Sarah McCauley, Summers County’s Candace Brown, Frankfort’s Katie Jan and Lincoln’s Madison Cunningham.

Cunningham won 300-meter low hurdles and picked up two second place finishes in 100-meter high hurdles and the 200-meter dash. Burch won the 400-meter dash and was on the state champion 4x400-meter relay team. McCauley impressed by winning the 1600-meter run and 3200-meter run after being injured much of the season.

Brown pulled off the sprinter version of a double by winning the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes. Jan was able to upset top-ranked Shannon Rutherford from Wayne to win the 800-meter run and finished second behind McCauley in the 1600. Cunningham claimed two second place finishes in the 200-meter dash and 400-meter dash.

Surprisingly, no state meet records were broken in any girls AA races.
