Over the last two years, a rivalry has seemed to bloom between St. Mary’s Maggie Drazba and Charleston Catholic’s Sami Harris.

After her strong performance at the state meet, Drazba now has five individual state titles--three this year and two last year--to her name, while Harris only has one.

Drazba broke two state records in the 1600-meter and 3200-meter records. She also tied the 800-meter run record with a time of 2:24.32.

After her record-breaking performance in the 3200-meter run Drazba said, “I wanted to win the 3200 this year after losing to Sami last year.”

“I didn’t really think about the race a whole lot,” Drazba explained. “I think I was so focued on winning.”

It will be interesting to see how the rivalry develops between Harris and Drazba as both girls are only sophomores.

The team race was the Williamstown show as they scored 38 points on  the first day of the meet en route to scoring 125 points and winning by 48 points.

The Yellow Jackets top performances came from their relays as they won every relay event expect the 4x800-meter relay event--finishing second.

Wahama’s Kelsey Zuspan doubled in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes. South Harrison’s Gretcen Lantz grabbed three individual state titles in the 400-meter dash, 300-meter low hurdles and long jump. Her time of 46.39 in the hurdle event set a new state meet record.

Lantz was able to edge Drazba for high point honors by scoring 36 points.

Williamstown’s Megan Steele set a state meet record in the high jump at 5 feet, 4 inches.
