Triple State Champion Godwin

Knabenshue- Double State Champion

Led by strong performances from sophomore Emily Godwin and senior Karissa Knabenshue, the Buckhannon-Uphsur girls was able to squeak past Martinsburg by one point for the team title.

Godwin was able to win three of the four events she was entered in. Godwin won the high jump, 100-meter high hurdles and 300-meter low hurdles. She finished third in the long jump behind Capital’s Alexandria Allen and Martinsburg’s Breayun Days.

After her high jump victory Godwin said, “It’s a great feeling to win and to see all your hard work throughout the year pay off at the state meet.”

Godwin was looking to set the state meet record in the high jump. However, Godwin was only able to clear 5 feet, 7 inches. Her best performance on the year is 5 feet, 10 inches, which ties her for third in the nation.

Meanwhile, Knabenshue came up big for the Buccaneers as she won both the discus and shot put.

Knabenshue and Godwin was able to secure 56 of Buckhannon’s 82 points.

Another big story at the state meet was Elkins’ Letitia Propst’s ability to capture three state titles in the 800-meter, 1600-meter and 3200-meter runs. The future WVU runner grabbed third in the 400-meter dash. She tied Godwin for high point honors with 36 points.

Letitia Propst - Triple State Chanpion

In each race she won, Propst found herself in late battles with different runners. She was able to use a kick to defeat Hurricane’s Tori Dent in the 800, Preston’s Kaitlyn Workman in the 1600 and University’s Amelia Paladino in the 3200.

One of the biggest surprises of the whole state meet was the fact that no AAA girls 4x800-meter relay team had broke the 10 minute barrier this season. However, the top 8 schools at the state meet all went under 10 minutes.

Preston’s Laura Shaffer used a late kick to get by Parkersburg’s Tori Boggs and Morgantown’s Brynn Harshbarger. Preston’s time was 9:45.08

Martinsburg swept the sprint events as freshman Mykera Days won the 100-meter dash and junior Jasmyn Hosby doubled in the 200-meter and 400-meter dashes.
