Wheeling Jesuit sweeps Marietta Open #3
Pioneer women finish second and men fifth at final home indoor meet of the season

MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College hosted the Marietta Open #3, its final home collegiate meet of the indoor season, Saturday (Feb. 24). Wheeling Jesuit (W.Va.) rallied from five points down with one event remaining to win the women's title and sweep the competition, which featured 12 women's teams and 11 men's squads. [

The Cardinal women finished with 134 points, using its eight points in the triple jump to top Marietta (131) and West Virginia Wesleyan (113), who took second and third. respectively. Wheeling Jesuit's men compiled 150 points, easing to a victory over the field, which included West Virginia Wesleyan (126) in second place and Muskingum (119), in third. Marietta's men placed fifth with 86 points.

The Pioneer women continued their theme of having record-breaking performances each time they take the track. On Saturday, four Marietta runners broke school records and a field athlete tied another.

Junior Joanna Ferrell (Mineral Wells, W.Va./Parkersburg South) topped her own record in the 200m dash, taking fifth place with a time of 28.62 records. Ferrell also placed sixth in the 55m dash (7.94 seconds).

Freshman Christi Tims (Olmsted Falls) cut some time off her 300m dash record, crossing the line in second place with a time of 45.97 seconds. Tims also took third in the 400m dash (1:05.22) and eighth in the 55m dash (8.16 seconds).

Freshman Randi Robertson (Avon Lake) improved upon her own school record in the mile run, finishing third with a time of 5:26.20.

Freshman Shannon McDonald (Lorain/Amherst Steele) set a school record in the 5,000m run, crossing the line in 19:40.88, which was good for third place. Teammate Kaitlin Smith (Essex Junction, Vt.) also ran under the previous record time; she took fifth with a time of 19:53.89.

Junior Breanne Kosar (Wheeling, W.Va./Wheeling Park) tied her school record in the high jump, placing second with a mark of 1.57m.

In addition to the five school-record performances, Marietta's women had a pair of seniors capture first-place finishes. Brea Gardner (Sheridan/Somerset) took the 500m run title with a time of 1:25.28, and Fizzy Ramsey (Danville, Ky./Boyle) earned first place in the pole vault with a mark of 9-06.26 (2.90m).

The Pioneer men had one first-place finisher. Sophomore Jered Mitchem (Marietta/Warren Local) won the 500m run in 1:09.00.

In addition, senior Tim Roberts (Worthington/Thomas Worthington) took second in the 500m run (1:11.62), freshman Zach Gay (Elyria/Oberlin) finished second in the high jump (6-02.00/1.88m) and sophomore Dan DeZordo (Louisville/Marlington) placed second in the weight throw (43-09.00/13.33m).

Marietta will return to action March 2-3 when it travels to Ada, Ohio, for the Ohio Athletic Conference Indoor Championships. A list of qualifiers will be made available early next week. A year ago, the Pioneer men took 10th with 13.5 points and the women placed ninth with 11 points. Both are looking to move up the standings in 2007.
