WV AA Regions' Highlights and Results Posted
WV#1 ranked Discus thrower, Christian Buckley, of Poca aided his team in winning the Region 4 AA on May 10 at Laidley Field at the University of Charleston. Buckley threw the discus 151' 1.5". His personal best is 162' 8.5" which he threw on April 19 at the Winfield Classic. Congrats to Nicholas County girls, Poca boys, Pikeview girls, Summers County boys, Bridgeport girls and boys, Oak Glen girls and Ritchie County Girls. -

Katie Jan and Bria Welker Dominate the PVC AA Championship
Frankfort's dynamic duo of Bria Welker and Katie Jan led their team to victory at the Potomac Valley Conference Championships. The dominating duo won every running event from the 100m through the 1600m. Welker pulled off the triple in the dash events in winning the 100m in 12.92, the 200m in 26.28, and the 400m in 1:01.64. Senior distance runner Jan had 2 Milesplit elite performances in winning the 1,600m in 5:10.83 and the 800m in 2:19.70. -

The Morgantown High School Girls once again traveled out of the state to win a large meet. The ladies finished 1st out of a 40 team field at the Mars Invitational held at Mars High School in Mars, Pennsylvania. -

Daddy Doug Retiring From WVRunners
After careful consideration and a long drawn out decision making process, I have decided it is time for me to retire from WVRunners and the Milesplit Network as Webmaster of WVRunners at the end of outdoor season. I have relocated and am no longer able to attend meets or give the State of West Virginia the coverage it deserves. WV Runners Bring Home 7 Medals at USATF National Youth Indoor Championship
Capital City Striders had 5 athletes compete over the weekend in a two day meet of over 1400 kids competing at the USATF Youth Indoor Nationals held at Prince George’s County in Landover, Maryland. They brought home 7 medals of which two were Silver and 5 were bronze medals. This was a great weekend of running for West Virginia athletes. Noah Castro competing as a 11-12 year old due to turning 11 on the last day of the year in 2013 broke the existing national record and finished 2nd in the 3000m in 10:18.13. -
Castro's Bring Home 4 Gold Medals at USATF South Zone Youth Championships
10 year old All-American and reigning double indoor AAU National Champion Noah Castro and his sister Barkley brought home 4 gold medals and 1 silver medal at the USATF South Zone Youth Championships held at JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, North Carolina last Saturday 2/17/2013. -

Amazing 9 year old and double indoor AAU National Champion Noah Castro of Hurricane, West Virginia easily won the Foot Locker South Region 3000m boys 10 and under race with a blazing fast time of 10:59 for a 5:54 mile pace. Brafford Top West Virginian at Battle of the Potomac
Matthew Brafford, a junior, from George Washington High School in Charleston, WV was the lone bright spot at the Battle of the Potomac or Border War #7 as it is affectionately called on Saturday November 17th in Gaithersburg, MD. Brafford finished 6th in the seeded race with a time of 16:57. Maryland won the boys race and Virginia took the girls title. -
WV Runners Staff Member Wins Big Half Marathon
WV Runners staff member and my son, Lance McDaniel, competed in the Thunder Road Half Marathon on Saturday in Charlotte, NC along with 2,385 other runners and came out on top in his first competitive half marathon with a time of 1:14.30 for a 5:41 mile pace over the 13.1 miles. Maggie Drazba Stakes Claim To Best Ever Cross country is a team sport, and Philip Barbour girls and Fairmont Senior boys took the A-AA titles. However, on this day all eyes were on an outstanding individual that is simply the best female high school distance runner ever in the state of West Virginia. Maggie Drazba, a senior, from St. Marys shattered the course record by almost 15 seconds with a blazing time on the difficult Cabell Midland 5000 meter course in Ona, West Virginia in 17:17.89. -

I ran this article at the end of last cross country season and think it is appropriate to bring it back. With the 2011 cross country season fresh on our minds, let's look forward to 2012 cross country season and the 50 fastest returning West Virginia girls. Maggie Drazba, Sami Harris, Victoria Cooke and Amelia Paladino should be back for an encore to what was a spectacular and drama filled season for the ladies. As always, there will be newcomers to watch and others that will come to the top. Nine months and counting. I can't wait. -
WV Fastest 50 Returning Boys Cross Country Runners For 2012
I ran this article at the end of last season and think it is appropriate to bring it back. With the 2011 cross country season fresh on our minds, let's look forward to 2012 cross country season and the 50 fastest returning West Virginia boys. Jacob Burcham again tops the list as he has for the two previous years. However, many seniors were in the 2011 race and this leaves a bunched field for the next spot. Only 15 seconds separate the next 5 returners after Burcham. This is an early observation, but take note that Cabell Midland has 4 of the top 10 returners. -

Emily Godwin National Champ at USATF Junior Olympics
Emily Godwin a junior from Buckhannon-Upsur and the US#6 ranked high jumper coming into the 2012 USATF National Junior Olympic Championships took home the gold today in the high jump with a clearing height of 5' 8.75" in Baltimore Maryland at the Morgan State University Track and Field complex. Her impressive resume now has the title of National Champion. I will add photos later. -

Dante Price of Harpers Ferry has earned All-American honors in the 200m with a personal best 21.22 while running the turns precisionally out of lane 5. Price has another opportunity tomorrow as he competes in the 100m dash finals. Pictures to be added later. -

USATF Region 5 Junior Olympic Sunday Highlights
Dante Price swept the short sprints by winning the 200 meter dash in 21.59 (surprising some Michigan & Ohio sprinters). Dante won the 100 meter dash on Saturday. Ramone Garnett won the 13-14 boys Shot put, Karly Hinkle won the 13-14 girls high jump and Barkley Castro got her second gold in the 17-18 girls 800. -
USATF Region 5 JO Championship Saturday Qualifiers
National Champ Castro Leads Way Noah Castro of Scott West Virginia has taken up where he left off from the indoor season. On Saturday, the double national champion in the boys Bantam Division at AAU Northern Indoor National Championships, took the Region 5 JO by 16 seconds with a 5:05.78 1500m in the Bantam Boys division. This meet is a national qualifying meet for the 2012 USATF National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships to be held at Morgan State Univesity in Baltimore, Maryland on July 23-29. Warren Coon: A Great Man has Passed on
Warren Coon, Sherman Track and Field coach, passed away Friday at his home after a long battle with cancer. When I get funeral arrangements, I will post them here. "Memorial service will be at 2:00 PM on Friday June 1 in the Sherman High School gymnasium. Visitiation will be from 10:00 AM-2:00PM before the service....wear your school colors (his request) or your Team Coon Bear t-shirt." -

Godwin High Jumps US #4 5-09.00 at Home Meet
Last Tuesday, Buckhannon-Upshur junior sensation, Emily Godwin high jumped to a US #4 height of 5-09.00 at her home meet. Godwin has entered 18 events this season and is undefeated placing first in every event she has individually participated in. Drazba National Runner-Up at USATF XC Championships
Maggie Drazba of St. Mary's competing in the junior women division 6K race finished 2nd at the USA Cross Country Championships at Forest Park Central Fields in St.Louis on Saturday February 11, 2012. Her 6K time was 21:07.7. This is a little under 5:40 per mile pace or 17:36 5K. However, this would better her previous personal best of 17:40 in the 5K and she ran another 1000 meters. -
Noah Castro Double AAU Indoor National Champion
9 Year old Noah Castro of Hurricane, West Virginia representing the Capital City Striders became a double national champion in the boys Bantam Division at AAU Northern Indoor National Championships at Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, IL this past weekend. Castro won the 800meter run on Saturday in 2:36.6 and the 1500meter run on Sunday in 5:13.31 This is smoking fast for a 10 year old. -

Drazba 13th; Graf 14th at Foot Locker South
Congratulations to Maggie Drazba and Eric Graf for placing the highest of all West Virginia runners at the Foot Locker South Reginal held at McAlpine Park in Charlotte, NC. Drazba competing in the seeded race placed 13th in a personal best and WV#1 time of 17:40. Graf also running in the seeded race placed 14th and ran a personal best and WV#2 time of 15:15. -

Bridgeport Girls and Fairmont Boys Victorious at Big Ten Championships
File Photo of Alyssa Scherich by Lance McDaniel Senior Alyssa Scherich of Fairmont Senior in a time of 21:32 won the tight battle for individual honors at the Big Ten Conference Championships held at North Marion High School, and Bridgeport girls edged past Philip-Barbour for team titles. Junior Nicholas Trefz running 18:27 led his team to victory and made it a sweep for Fairmont Senior in the individual championship honors. -
Drazba's Lead St. Marys Boys and Girls to LKC Wins
Charlie Drazba of St. Marys is accustomed to taking 2nd seat to the other famous Drazba named Maggie. However, in his own right Charlie, a senior, is a very accomplished runner and led his team to a narrow 6 point victory over Doddridge County by taking individual honors in 17:43 on the 5K course at the Little Kanawha Conference (LKC) Championship held at Cokely Camp Ground hosted by Ritchie County High School. -
Hurricane Girls and Midland Boys Run to MSAC Titles

Workman Captures Times Invitational
While the Preston High School boys’ team was in Gettysburg Pennsylvania, the lady knights were in Fairmont taking care of business. Sophomore sensation Kaitlyn Workman (20:21) led her team to victory as she won the individual battle between Alyssa Scherich (20:38) of Fairmont Senior. -
Paladino Runs WV#2 18:26 To Win OVAC
Paladino File Photo Sophomore Amelia Paladino of University won the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference (OVAC) championship held at Meadowbrook High School in Ohio in a WV#2 best time of 18:26.50. -
Schwarzenberg 15:48 Wins Gettysburg Invitational
Peter Schwarzenberg a senior from Preston High School ran a personal best 15:48 to win the Gettysburg XC Invitational for his 3rd win in a row. -
Drazba Defeats Harris on Harris' Home Course
In their 3rd meeting of the year, Maggie Drazba of St. Marys with a time of 18:40 edged Sami Harris (18:47) of Charleston Catholic on Harris' home course at the Charleston Catholic Invitational. -

Burcham (15:00.2) 2nd at Great American Cross Country Festival
Kirtner Wins Seeded Race in 15:47 Daniel Moore (Holy Trinity FL) pulled a huge upset by running a course record 14:57.6 over the 5k layout to defeat US#4 Jacob Burcham (WV), who ran 15:00.2. Jacob Thomson (Holy Cross KY) was 3rd in 15:02.8. O'Hara PA boys got the team win with 119 points. -
Morgantown Girls Win Another Out of State Large Meet
The Morgantown ladies have ventured into Pennsylvania and now Virginia and have taken team victories in large out of state meets. -
St. Marys Sweeps Bearcat Invitational
Drazba Blazes Field St. Marys with their convincing wins in both the girls and boys races at the Bearcat Invitational held at Grafton prove to be a worthy contender for the State titles which at one point seemed inconceivable with the dominance of Philip Barbour on the ladies side and Philip Barbour placing ahead of St. Marys last year at the State meet in the boys race. -
University Girls 3rd at Carlisle Invitational
Competing in the top Division at the 19th annual Carlisle Puma Meet of Champions in Carlisle, PA, the University High School girls led by sophomore Amelia Paladino’s 4th place finish in 19:12.55 placed a solid 3rd in the Puma division and overall. 63 girl teams and 445 runners from across the region converged on the 5000m course hosted by Carlisle High School. Phillips Leads Bridgeport Senior to Victory at Don Swiger Invitational
Bridgeport Senior High School girls team led by junior Morganne Phillips’ 1st place finish of 20:00.60 captured the Don Swiger Invitational held at Hampshire High School. Bridgeport scored 49 points to runner-up Hampshire’s 61 points who was paced by 2nd place finisher and sophomore Rachel Lipps’s 20:15.7. -

US#6 Burcham 15:03 Tops Field at Trinity/Valkyrie
Photo by Jonathan Grooms US #6 Jacob Burcham, junior from Cabell Midland, ran his kind of race to win the prestigious Trinity/Valkyrie Invitational in Louisville Kentucky in 15:03. Burcham was content to stay in the lead pack and remained in 1st place or 2nd place for most of the race. With about a 1000 meters to go Brock Baker of Oakland High School in Tennessee made a move and Burcham went with him until he made his own move to outkick Baker who ran 15:07.
