Jefferson’s Graf and Colbert Earn Individual Honors On a crisp and beautiful late summer’s morning in Elkins, WV, the Hampshire girls and Jefferson boys conquered the demanding Davis & Elkins College 5k cross country course to seize first place in their respective divisions. Jefferson’s Ryan Graf set a new course record in winning the boys’ title and freshman teammate Abby Colbert raced to win the girls’ individual title.
Cabell Midland Boys and Morgantown Girls lead the early season team rankings. These rankings are based on 2012 cross country performances to date, and do not reflect course difficulty. When successful high school sports programs lose athletes to graduation, they are expected to reload – not rebuild – for the coming year. However when you win a state championship with three freshmen, three sophomores and a junior, what do you do?
Preston’s Kaitlyn Workman seizes Girl’s Title; Musselman Girls Team Third West Virginia was well represented at the Interstate Classic in Clear Spring, MD on Saturday competing against a strong field of 19 teams from West Virginia, Virginia and Maryland including the Washington DC and Baltimore suburbs. The hot and humid conditions kept local medical personnel busy throughout the day but that didn’t stop the Jefferson High School boys’ team from seizing the Large School Boys division title for the third consecutive year. In the Girls’ race, Preston’s Kaitlyn Workman raced away from the field to claim the Large School Girls individual crown while the Hampshire girls posted an impressive third place team finish.
