Berkeley Springs AA Girls State Champions; Frankfort's Welker, Jan Dominate

The Berkeley Springs High School girls' track team won five events and the team title, while Frankfort’s Bria Welker turned in a 40-point performance and earned high point honors at the West Virginia High School Class AA Girls Track & Field State Championships on May 18th-19th, 2012 at Laidley Field in Charleston, WV.

The Indians received first from Sarah Haynes in the high jump, Toni Davison in the pole vault, Harlie Stotler in the shot put and discus throw. Berkeley Springs also won the girl’s 4x400 meter relay of (Keri Shetler, Kayla Mundey, Danielle Haynes, Melissa Colby).

Other scoring team members: Sara Younker placed fifth in the 3200 meter run, Jordan Bennett placed sixth in the 100 meter high hurdles and fifth in the long jump, Casey Solomon placed second in the high jump and pole vault, Sara Haynes placed sixth in the long jump. Berkeley Springs placed fourth in the 4x800 meter relay of (Kayla Mundey, Sara Younker, Macy Houck, Danielle Haynes).

Frankfort High School finished in second behind David Mundey’s Indians. The Dynamic Duo, juniors Bria Welker and Katie Jan, dominated the field by winning a combined total of eight medals - seven first and a fourth. The Falcons' only had 3 athletes and they nearly defeated Berkeley Springs for the State Team Championship with a score of 76-74.    

Welker ran a 12.33 in the 100 meter dash, 25.19 in the 200 meter dash, ran a PR of 57.13 in the 400 meter dash (State Meet Record), and went 17-8.25 in the Long Jump, placing first in all four individual events. Bria also ran a PR of 25.15 in the 200 meter dash (State Meet Record), while placing first in the prelims.

Jan ran an 11:42.08 in the 3200 meter run, ran a 5:14.43 in the 1600 meter run, and ran a PR of 2:16.24 in the 800 meter run, placing first in all three events. Katie ran a PR of 59.69 in the 400 meter dash, placing fourth. Jan also finished second to her teammate in the high point standings with 34 points.
