Wheeling Park Sweeps

 

 

Wheeling Park swept the boys and girls Region I AAA titles held at Preston High School in convincing fashion. The boys blew the competition away with 196.5 points easily outdistancing the team from Fairmont Senior with 88 points. The girls had a tigher battle but made it a sweep with 126.5 points to Morgantown's 104 points.

 

For the Wheeling Park boys, Dewayna Neal, Errin Baynes, and DeVaughn Palmer were double winners. Neal, a junior, won the discuss (139' 05") and the shot put (46' 2"), Baynes, a junior and #2 ranked high jumper in the U.S., won the long jump (19-09.75) and the high jump (6' 4"), and Palmer, the senior, won both hurdle events taking the 110m high hurles in 15.64 and the 300m hurdles in 41.06.

 

Senior Dayton McVicker of Fairmont Senior was the only athlete to garner three individual titles as he took home the Region I titles in the 800m (2:04.51), 1600m (4:26.01) and the 3200m (9:56.48).

 

Freshman Kaitlyn Workman of Preston won both the 1600m and 3200m (5:24.98 and 11:46.40 respectively). Alyssan Scherich, a junior, from Fairmont Senior won the odd combination of the 400m dash in 59.04 and the 100m hurdles in 15.29.

 

Kiley Defibaugh of John Marshall and Sarah Fisher of Wheeling Park earned Milesplit National Silver Elite standards. Difebaugh cleared 11' in the pole vault and Fisher threw the shot put 37' 10.5".
