Herd Track and Field Places Five in Top-10 at VT Challenge

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Marshall University women's track and field team placed five student-athletes in the top-10 at the Virginia Tech Challenge this weekend at Rector Field House.

The Thundering Herd now turns its attention to the Conference USA Championship Meet set to take place next weekend, hosted by the University of Houston.

Friday:

Junior Rachel Coaxum put together a season best in the 60 meter hurdles as she just missed reaching the finals with a 12th place finish and a time of 8.95.

Freshman Cheri Bunner put together her personal best time in the 60 meter dash at 8.20. Moriah Njoku also had a personal best as she ran a time of 26.31 in the 200 meter dash.

The Herd had two top-10 finishes in the same field event as Molly Grove and Elizabeth Barnhart finished fifth and sixth in weight throw, respectively. Grove put up a distance of 15.85m, while Barnhart tossed a 15.66m.

Saturday:

Saturday saw Elaine Derricott place sixth in the triple jump and ninth in the shot put. As she prepares for the heptathlon next weekend at the C-USA Championships, Derricott had a jump of 11.78m in the triple, and a throw of 11.79m in the shot put.

Also recording a top-10 finish in the shot put was freshman Amanda Hottenstein. The Fleetwood, Pa., native had a toss of 12.90m, good for sixth overall.

Brittany Carey had a monster run in the 400 meter dash as she crushed her personal best and ran to a time of 59.58, good for 18th overall.
