MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Redshirt freshman Kaitlyn Gillespie captured first-place in the 1,000-meter race on Saturday as the West Virginia University track and field team posted an excellent finish at the Doug Raymond Invitational, hosted by Kent State.

 

Gillespie took the top spot with a BIG EAST qualifying time of 2:54.16. The Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, native also race well in the 800-meter event, finishing in fourth with a time of 2:16.43.

The Mountaineers also saw top finishes from senior Chelsea Carrier who took first in the 60-meter hurdles (8.42), and the 4x400 relay team of Shakiyla Cosby, Jordann Mitchell, Brittany Wolford and Carrier (3:51).

Sophomore Aubrey Moskal and freshman Allison Pettit ran well in the mile, placing third (5:05.62) and sixth (5:07.36), respectively, while the distance medley relay team (Jessica O’Connell, Keri Bland, Kaylyn Christopher and Kate Harrison) finished second (11:53.62).

In the field events, sophomore Sydney Cummings posted a first-place showing in the high jump (1.70 meters), while freshman Katlyn Shelar captured first in the pole vault (3.35 meters).

West Virginia returns to the WVU Shell Building next weekend, as it plays host to the WV State Farm Games on Saturday, Jan. 22.
