MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University cross country team announced the signing of standout Canadian distance runner Kate Harrison on Tuesday, Nov. 14.

"We are very excited to have Kate join the Mountaineer program," says second year coach Sean Cleary. "Kate was very well coached at Birchmount High by Bill Stevens and knows this sport well."

Harrison, a Toronto, Ontario, Canada, native, finished in second place in the 3000m race at the Ontario High School Finals this past season. The student-athlete specializes in the 1500m and 3000m runs. Her best time in the 1500m is 4:33 and her best in the 3000m is 10:01. These performances rank as some of the finest results that an incoming WVU freshman has ever run.

Harrison could not be joining the team at a better time. The young Mountaineer squad made vast improvements during the 2006 season, earning a sixth place finish at the BIG EAST Championship and a fourth place finish at the Mid-Atlantic Championship.

"Kate's enthusiasm to run with this group is what excites me the most," says Cleary. "She will run as fast as she chooses to at the collegiate level. The sky is the limit."
